Tawang Galdan Namgye Lhatse

Ta (horse) + Wang – (Chosen) = Tawang (A place chosen by a horse)

Galden (Paradise) + Namgye (Celestial) + Lhatse (Divine) = A place chosen by a horse is the celestial divine place.


The monastery was founded by Merek Lama Lodre Gyamsto in 1680-81 sometime. This picture was taken in the main temple called “Dukhang” literally means assembly building. The image of Buddha in the lotus position is 5.5 meters (~18 Feet) tall.
